Know all the Tools of your Editing Program
The first step to editing like an expert is knowing the tools available to improve your video. Otherwise, you will create productions that are always the same because you don’t understand the rest of the options the program has.
For this, take a whole day and try each of the options you see on the menu. You might be surprised that you can create unique and innovative effects that set you apart from others.
Invest in Quality Equipment
Now, you can have the best editing program, but if your camera does not have a good resolution at the time of filming, it will be difficult for you to create unique videos. Therefore, acquire equipment that meets your needs.
Always Edit Audio Independently
Another of the professionals’ secrets is that they never upload the videos with the audio recorded at the time of filming. It is because there are usually background sounds that reduce their quality.
So take the time to create new audio where viewers can perfectly understand everything you explain in your video.
Don’t overload with Transitions or Filters
Remember that video editing is to improve the moments that perhaps we’re not as striking or sharp as you would like. It means you don’t need to put thousands of different transitions, text on each clip or filters that change the original colours.
It will not only give you a way that you are not an editing professional, but it will also make users uncomfortable, and they will choose not to watch your videos.

1. Maintain a Project Directory
When editing a large project for the first time, it’s easy to leave everything on your desk and hope for the best. Well, to put it simply, don’t do it. It would help if you created a project directory every time you start an editing project.
Create a project folder and inside this folder, create some more folders with labels like Raw Footage, Sound, Music, Photos, Graphics etc. Put all the resources in these folders according to their type. And, It is also a good idea to label each file with a brief description of its content.
The project file (either for iMovie or Premiere) can be placed in the directory as-is. No special folders are required.
This project organization will make your workflow easier to access and speed up.
2. Two is a Magic Number
Although Hard drives and memory cards can fail when you least expect it, keeping a copy of your project directory in a separate location is safer. Cloud storage will suffice, but download speeds and storage space may limit you. It’s always best to keep a copy on your computer and an external hard drive.
If you want to keep everything archived after the project is complete, transfer the files to a second external drive and delete them from your computer. This way, you will free up space on your computer while keeping two copies of the project.
3. Avoid Jumping
Recording an interview where the interviewee says “uh” and “uh” every other breath is a hassle. If you just cut out the “um” and the “um”, the sequence of images will look choppy.
The good news is that you can overlay additional content-related video clips (called clips or trims) on top of those awkward moments. If you do this carefully, it will seem like you speak smoothly and more accessible for your audience to follow.
Note that you will need a more advanced non-linear editing system like Adobe Premiere or Final Cut. Prosumer editors allow you to layer videos, while iMovie does not.
4. Vary your Shots
You need your content to be visually attractive. Instead of using the same frame for the entire video, try using more exciting angles. Although, It could be something as simple as recording your interview with two cameras and switching between them (another way to hide the awkward “uh” and “uh”)
However, use these abbreviations sparingly. Please don’t do it every second. A good rule of thumb is to cut to the beat of the music or in the middle when people are talking.
5. Don’t Forget to Color
The Coloring consists of two components: colour correction and colour correction. These are essential editing steps you don’t want to skip, no matter how excellent or well-edited your footage is.
Colour correction is adjusting standard editing tools, such as brightness, contrast, and saturation, to achieve the same colour in all clips. And then use those tools again to ensure everything is a natural colour, the way the human eye perceives it. This editing step is essential for visual consistency.
Colour grading uses the same tools as colour grading, usually plus filters and effects, to create a particular mood for your story. Although, there are no rules as this creative process will vary from publisher to publisher. You can do without colour grading if you’re not going for a particular aesthetic and want to keep it natural.
